U8 & U9 Blitz in Waterford 2014-09-17 11:30:00

On Saturday 13th September Inniscarra U8 & U9 teams travelled to Waterford. This blitz was an inter county blitz with teams from Munster and Leinster represented. It was organised by Roanmore Juvenile GAA Club, located in Waterford, they have run a Charity Hurling Blitz for past 18 years in aid of various charities for 2014 the nominated charity is Bonmahon Lifeguard and Inshore Lifeboat. In 2013 124 teams\1400 kids participated from Waterford, Kilkenny, Wexford, Carlow, Dublin, Cork etc. Games are run off from 10am to 7pm and with use of 3 pitch locations - Roanmore, De La Salle and Mt Sion.

This was the first year that Inniscarra have attended this event. Three teams were entered from each age group. The teams were to have minimum 7 players with a maximum panel of 12 per team. The U8 had 30 players and 32 players from U9. Due to these large numbers a bus would travel for each team with players, coaches and parents travelling together.

The blitz was referenced as their All Ireland and given the teams/counties that were represented on the day it was teams from Cork, Waterford, Wexford, Killkenny, Kerry and Tipperary. Each team has 3 matches to play in a given pitch. The referees were supplied along with a co-ordinator by the club running the event.

We set off from the club house at 10:30 in the morning. There was great excitement with parents also travelling by cars to support both teams. Both buses were at full capacity that ensured the noise levels on board were at full volume. We took approx. 2 hours to get to Waterford and then straight onto the pitches for our games.

The hurling was of a very high standard and Inniscarra did very well in all games played. The boys all showed ‘scarra sprit and the other ‘scarra teams cheered on the team that were playing. The atmosphere was electric with players and supporters enjoying the games. After the teams were finished there was a medal presentation with Sean Kelly MEP and Minister Paudie Coffey helping present the medals.

The teams travelled back that evening with a great stories on board of players scoring against Killkenny, Tipp and showing how good Inniscarra are. There were songs and jokes with all enjoying the day out.

We would like to thank the club for paying our entrance fees and providing money towards both buses. Thanks to the Huntsman Bar, Centra and Tower Pizza for providing goody bags for the teams. The coaches and parents who helped on the day.
