Inniscarra 1-18 Fermoy 1-11

ANOTHER disappointing day for Fermoy GAA Club at Pairc Uí Rinn last Sunday as the club’s U21 hurling stars came up short against Inniscarra in the County U21 hurling decider.

After the club’s Intermediate hurlers and footballers failed to take their respective championship show piece games at the same venue last season this seemed like the perfect opportunity to get back to the top table for the younger side.

On the day, however, the North Cork side just couldn’t handle what an impressive looking Inniscarra side brought to the party.

Inniscarra had to play the majority of this one with just 14 after midfielder Liam Ryan was shown straight red inside the first 10 minutes, however, that seemed to spur on the Muskerry men as they showed no shortage of guile, experience and passion from that to the final whistle.

Inniscarra deserved this win, of that there is no doubt. The displays given by the likes of Tomás O’Connor, Owen McCarthy, and Sean O’Donoghue were instrumental in this win.

Fermoy’s Eric Delaney, Shane O’Keeffe and keeper John Wales played their part for the vanquished side with Wales making some top class saves during the game.

This game opened up at a solid pace with the sides trading the first few score. The first major talking point was the dismissal of Ryan, which looked like it could signal a shift in fortunes for both sides, but it was Inniscarra that took the most from the loss of a player bagging three unanswered points to which helped them to go in at the break leading by four 0-9 to 0-5.

A couple of personnel changes at the interval from Fermoy was their immediate response to losing the first half and the side were rewarded shortly into the second period when a good move resulted in Shane Aherne being fouled in the Inniscarra box. O’Connor stepped up to raise the green flag throwing this game right back into the melting pot.

McCarthy responded with a tasty flick on goal for Inniscarra, which reopened a four point gap. A brace each from McCarthy and Stephen Dornan in the last quarter pushed Inniscarra into a winning position and, while Fermoy battled all the way to the end, there was little doubt who was going to take the spoils.

A great day for Inniscarra who had already secured the Premier 2 Minor Title while for Fermoy it was just more heartbreak. Both sides have shown recently that the future looks bright for their respective clubs.
